Lowe Wines: NSW’s Best Organic Winemaker

Lowe Wines continues its streak of success with the announcement at the NSW Wine Awards of the 2009 Lowe Zinfandel receiving the ‘NSW Department of Primary Industries Award for Best Organic Wine’.

The 2009 Lowe Zinfandel was one of 30 organic wines entered in the NSW Wine Awards, which was a substantial increase on previous years.

This in the third trophy to be awarded to the 2009 Lowe Zinfandel, having recently been awarded the ‘Best Red Wine of the Show’ and ‘Best Wine of the Show’ at the Australia / New Zealand Organic Wine Show.

Lowe Zinfandel Vineyard, Mudgee

The Lowe Zinfandel in only made in limited quantities and comes from the Lowe vineyard on Tinja Lane in Mudgee.  This is a wine with an enviable record, having upset the Americans when it won the ‘Best Zinfandel Trophy’ at the 2005 International Wine Challenge.

“This is an extremely rewarding trophy,” commented winemaker and owner, David Lowe.  “We have put a great deal of energy into our Zinfandel vineyard.  Being organic is all about improving the vine health, which in turn translates into better quality grapes. We are seeing the results now.”

David Lowe is a leading figure in the Australian wine industry.  He is the president of the NSW Wine Industry Association and Vice President of the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia.  David is a key proponent of increasing awareness and education of NSW Wines in both Australia and abroad.

“The Citibank NSW Wine Awards are a crucial part of building awareness of the diversity of the wines being made in NSW.  Our effort is certainly working, with growth of bottle wine sales in NSW outstripping that of some of the other states.  One of the most exciting things about this growth is that it is predominantly being driven by the $20 plus price point.”
