The Patina that only age can achieve

In anticipation of Orange Wine Week, Patina Wines has released its Orange Region 2007 Patina Reserve Chardonnay and 2007 Patina Sauvignon Blanc Fumé.

Both wines have been cellared at Patina with the objective of releasing them with a number of years maturation.  “Most wines are released very soon after vintage,” commented Patina owner and winemaker Gerald Naef.  “We have been very conscious of ensuring that we mature these wines so that they get to our customers with the extra layers of maturation and complexity.  That’s certainly how I like to enjoy my wine.”

The major component of this Patina Sauvignon Blanc Fumé was fermented in a combination of new and older French oak barrels.  This was then blended back with a small parcel of tank fermented Sauvignon Blanc in order to add another layer of aromatics and grapefruit like freshness to the palate.

“My objective is to make a food friendly style, which in my opinion, means less of the ‘jump out of the glass’ and more texture and palate length.  The four years in barrel and then bottle gives the fruit, oak, lees and grapefruit-like acid time to harmonise.”

Also released after a number of years is the 2007 Patina Reserve Chardonnay.  Orange consistently produces world class chardonnay;  2007 was quite temperate and it brought out the best in chardonnay.

The 2007 Patina Reserve Chardonnay was fermented in a combination of stainless steel, new and seasoned French oak.  The blend was aged on its lees for nine months and then matured for a further three months prior to bottling.

“Orange chardonnay generally improves quite dramatically during its first few years in bottle,” explained Gerald.  “The natural acidity allows the oak and fruit to integrate beautifully.  For this reason, we hold back our Reserve wines in order to show it as it’s starting to hit its straps.”

Patina Wines was established in 1999 when Gerald and Angie Naef planted a small vineyard in Orange, NSW. Gerald’s interest in winemaking stemmed from his formative years growing up in the Central Valley of California. Having moved to Australia in 1981, Gerald and his family purchased an irrigation property in North West NSW. However, the interest in winemaking continued and in 1999 the Patina Vineyard was established.
